Neighborhood Halloween Gathering

We really do have a great neighborhood and great neighbors. Luckily, many of them volunteer to put on neighborhood events such as our annual Halloween festival. There was a pretty good turn out and we had face painting, colored hair spray, shaving cream fun and crafts.

We barely made it in time because we all took a short nap.....I'll run late due to a nap any day.

The girls got to see Marley, Thomas & Joshua there so they were excited.

Texas vs. Kansas

The UT game Saturday was a blow out against Kansas. I don't remember the final score but it was at least 40 something to 0.

This picture was right before I left for the game. The girls were going to spend the evening with Nana and they were super excited. Joe, Dan & Alissa got tickets so we were all going to enjoy the game!

I absolutely love volunteering for the games! It has been such a great opportunity and I've had so much fun. We get there super early.....even before the players so it makes for a very long day. It's worth it though.

This week I got to go down on the field for a picture with Bevo. I've volunteered for all 4 home games and going down on the field was a little perk for me. I was so EXCITED!

I also got this picture with the canon!

Texas State Alumni

This post is really just because I plan to turn my blog into a scrapbook for the girls and I want to share this story with them.

Back in August, on the drive home from the Great Wolf Lodge, I received an email from a professor I had at Texas State notifying me that I was selected for the Dr. Herkimer Outstanding Alumni Award for the School of Health Administration. He asked if I would accept and of course I said I would. I was one of two people selected for this award and the awards banquet was held Friday night.

I have two degrees from Texas State so the School of Health Administration has a very special meaning to me....I spent lots of money there and 6 years completing my education between both degrees. I truly didn't realize how big a deal this was until days before the event.  It seems that all Texas State Alumni from the College of Health Professions were aware of this and started reaching out to me to offer their congratulations. I have had an outpouring of positive feedback from colleagues, current students, other alumni and the faculty.

The other award recipient and myself were both asked to speak at the Healthcare Administration conference in the afternoon. I'm guessing there were at least 300 students (undergraduate & graduate level) along with faculty and I was asked to share my personal story related to my career success.

After the conference the school hosted a banquet & dinner. There they gave several student scholar awards and inducted students into the honor society, Epsilon Phi Delta. There were two alumni awards given, which was clearly the main focal point of the night. The first award was for Outstanding Preceptor (undergraduate and graduate level). A very special person to me, Laura, received the Undergraduate Preceptor Award and it was extremely special to me since I was her preceptor when she was graduating back in 2003. The other award was the Dr. Herkimer Outstanding Alumni Award and I was one of two recipients for the award.

This is Dr. Herkimer. He is retired but was a long time professor for the School of Health Administration.

This is my boss for the past 10 years. At the end of August he moved to another hospital but Dr. Nowicki invited him to the banquet and he asked Don to introduce me. I cannot even begin to explain everything Don shared about me to that room full of people. All I can say is I was floored and almost speechless with all of the positive recognition. In my job I am usually the one to give out recognition so to be on the other side was incredibly special.  It was all the more special to have my hospital CEO be there to not just support me but publicly recognize me.

This is Professor Mooney. Mooney taught my Human Resource class when I was an undergraduate and I've worked with him for the past 15 years placing graduating seniors in a residency at our hospital. I've either personally hired or found a job for 7 of those students and I know they would each say that I helped them start their career. Pretty amazing and what I love the most! Professor Mooney is the one who nominated me for the Outstanding Alumni award and he came up to me to tell me there was no one else that he thought compared to me and that I was an easy choice. Wow.

This is Laura. Laura did a residency for me in 2003 and she was amazing. I hired her once she graduated and she's now in an equivalent role as mine. I feel like a proud momma! I also teared up as she received her Outstanding Preceptor Award because she was so sweet and talked about how I was her preceptor and taught her how important it was and set the example.

Friday was a very memorable day. I received congratulatory messages all day and had many students find me that evening to ask if I could help them get started when they graduate. I will truly never forget this event and I am thrilled to be considered an "outstanding alumni" for my school. They presented me with a lapel pin, an engraved plaque and a painting of the Old Main building on campus. I am so proud to be considered someone the faculty at my university felt deserved this honor.

Sweet Berry Farm '11

I seriously look forward to going out to Sweet Berry Farm in Marble Falls every year. I'm a little sad that I'll have to wait until next October to go back for the pumpkin patch....I truly love this place.

We went with our neighbors, Jen & Paul and Ronda & Stephen. Jen & Paul have two sons, Thomas and Joshua. Ronda & Stephen have a daughter, Sydney, and Ronda is pregnant with another little girl.

The first stop was to paint a pumpkin. This seemed to be a big hit with all of the kids.

Next up was the pony ride. They LOVED it. It's a good thing we don't live in the country because I can see them asking us for a pony one day.

Then we had to stop for some pictures....

The girls and Thomas. The girls love Thomas and he loves them!

PUMPKINS!

We then enjoyed some homemade strawberry ice cream before making a sand art necklace with Sydney.

They rode the barrel train....

And our favorite part is picking the flowers.....this part makes me very happy!

We had a wonderful day together. We got home and displayed our painted pumpkins on the porch and we put the flowers in a vase to enjoy. Kristen & Sarah absolutely loved it and it was a fantastic family day.

Party & Football

Kristen & Sarah have a top notch social calendar and they were double booked today for parties. Our neighbor, Marley, was having her birthday party today and Elizabeth (from school) was hosting a Halloween party at the same time. We were planning to attend Marley's party but she ended up coming down with a stomach bug and Stephanie had to cancel the party. Poor Marley was heartbroken but it will be rescheduled.

Joe instead took the girls over to Elizabeth's for the Halloween party that we didn't think we were going to. They came home with their pumpkins all decorated and stories for me of all the fun they had.

These pictures are from this morning. While Joe took the girls to the party, I went to the UT game. This time I didn't get to watch any of the game, which was just as well since they lost to Oklahoma State. I worked in a first aid station this time and I had lots of people who needed assistance due to the heat. Most of them were OSU fans since I was in their area of the stadium and I must say OSU fans are really nice. They didn't even try to rub it in after they beat us. They instead just thanked me for helping them.  I worked so hard....sitting up in the stands is so much easier but I enjoyed it.

Playing with my Mac

I've had my MacBook Pro for a couple of months now but I'm still only skimming the surface in what it can do. I put this quick slide show together using their birthday pictures but it's far from perfect. I can't figure out how to make the screen bigger and the music occasionally stops throughout the song. I'll have to keep playing with it to figure it out!

San Antonio Zoo

We wore our UT jerseys but it didn't bring any luck since UT got stomped by Oklahoma. At least we didn't spend our precious vacation time watching the game. We instead went to the zoo and had a great time.

Feeding the ducks

I love this picture of Dan & Ben

Sarah was trying to put her finger in the mouth of the fish   :-)

This bird caught me by surprise but it was fun letting the birds drink the nectar. This exhibit completely freaked out Sarah. She doesn't like loud noises and the birds were not only loud but she was scared of them flying on her. We left shortly after these pictures since it also started raining. We left to find a place to wait out the rain. Unfortunately, I missed the highlight of this exhibit, which involved Joe and Dan. Joe decided he would "pet" the bird on the head that was on his arm. The bird didn't like it and decided to bite him. The bird then pooped on Dan's arm....guess the bird didn't like either of them. So funny....wish I would have seen all of this happen.

Not all the animals were active but we still got to see lots of different animals and everyone had fun.
